The congruent number problem

This problem is a mathematical question that lies at the intersection of number theory and geometry. It can be stated as follows: which positive integers can be obtained as the area of a right-angled triangle with rational side lengths?

Despite the simplicity of the statement, a full solution to the congruent number problem is lacking to this day. In this project, we will delve into this problem to understand what is known about it and what makes it difficult. To do so, we will review several university-level mathematics topics, such as set theory, group theory, modular arithmetic, and elliptic curves.
